Research Interests

I am interested in how emotional information is communicated through music. One way of finding out about this is by using continuous response measurement and time series modelling. I am also interested in automated extraction of acoustic and psychoacoustic properties in sound recordings which may be used to model the emotional information. When I am not feeling quite so emotional, I also look at perception and performance of rhythm and articulation, and the musical character they produce (well, it’s not quite so). I have been known to look at the question of emotional perception of music by children. Anything else that I have been accused of researching is probably a malicious rumour. As to whether I deny it or not, well, that's a matter for further interdisciplinary investigation. One of my principle and most noble goals as a HCSNetter is to obtain a very small (close to 6) Erdos number (www.oakland.edu/enp/). Unfortunately at the moment it may well be near infinity, but this is a challenge I hope to face head-on in the not-too-distant future.
