Research Interests

My research interests fall squarely within the research discipline of Natural Language Processing and Language Technology. Specifically, I am interested in the area of automatic text-based question answering, and more generally, on discovering ways to find and exploit the vast information that exists in text documents. This information is easy to find by humans but difficult to find by machines. Building a text-based question answering system is a challenging task that combines topics from various research disciplines including information extraction, information retrieval, and automated summarisation. Furthermore, given the increasing amount of text information available digitally, there is a clear need for the development of such systems. I am exploring the use of linguistic information (especially syntax and semantics). Given the large volumes of data to process I am also exploring the use of techniques that enable the fast processing of text. Furthermore, since the text documents may contain noise, errors, or unexpected information that need to be accounted for, my research includes the development of robust techniques. I currently run an ARC-funded project called AnswerFinder. The project team is expanding and we have participated in the competition-based Text REtrieval Conference (TREC) every year since 2003.
