Research Interests

I am a Computer Scientist and have worked in various areas relating to language and cognition over the last 20 years. I completed a PhD in Wellington, New Zealand on computer models of reading development and then moved to Macquarie University, Sydney to work in the Speech Hearing and Language Research Centre (SHLRC) and more recently the Computing Department.

My research is split between the areas of speech technology, where I'm interested in processing recordings from multi-party meetings, and linguistic annotation and corpus tools. In this latter strand I've been the main author of the Emu Speech Database System and am currently working on a model for distributed shared annotation under an ARC eResearch Special Research Initiative grant. When complete, this should enable researchers to manage multiple contributions to annotations of both text and audio, sharing their work in real time with colleagues around the country.

My work in Linguistic Annotation has also led to an interest in markup in general and RDF and the semantic web in particular. I've worked on query languages for language annotations which are relevant to some issues in the general Semantic Web. More recently my work on keeping track of annotations has led to some proposals for version control in RDF data stores.
