Research Interests

My primary research interest is the Aboriginal languages of Darwin and its hinterland. I have undertaken fieldwork on a number of languages in this area, and produced a number of grammars. Within the broad framework of descriptive linguistics, I am particularly interested in the interaction between data from these languages and general phonological and morphological theories. My recent research has focussed on coronal articulations. Aboriginal languages have particularly rich inventories of coronal place oppositions - up to four place oppositions. The production of coronal oppositions is poorly understood for all languages including English, and general theoretical models are based on inference from indirect data. I am currently working with other researchers to obtain more direct data (EMA)from Aboriginal languages, with the aim to revise general models of the production of coronal place oppositions.
